Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness Intro
> Tonight, Tonight
> Where Boys Fear to Tread
BC: (raspy) Thank you very much. (making fun of his raspy voice) Thank you very much. You kids is great.
BC: Thanks a lot everybody for comin’. Nice to see everybody. We appreciate you waiting for so long for us to get...here. Thank you very much. Like to do a song we don’t play very much, this is called Here Is No Why.
Here Is No Why
(BC after “bumblebee mouth”: And that girl broke me in two. And left me with nothin’ to do. Another American tragedy of the highest intellectual proportions, yeah. And I give it all back to you...)
Porcelina of the Vast Oceans
> Rocket (partial)
Iha: Thank you, thank you very much. That was very psychedelic, yes? And now, ladies and gentlemen, we would like to bring a very special guest to the stage. All the way from Milwaukee, ladies and gentlemen, please put your hands together for...of The Frogs, Jimmy Frog! Hey, Jimmy Frog. I can tell you’re very excited about Jimmy Frog. Jimmy’s purpose may be unknown at the minute but he will lead us in this next song so let’s dance our way into oblivion with Jimmy Frog.
BC: Now you....
BC: [2 unintelligible words], you obviously don’t know about this, James. Jimmy for about 15 years has had long hair. Tonight, as a special event, during 1979, Jimmy now will not only sing but his hair will be cut during the song.
Iha: Now how about that.
D’arcy: And not only....
Iha: We have our good friend Peter cutting the hair.
D’arcy: No, not only - well, James, you didn’t know this, but special guest star of the stage and screen, Warren Beatty from Shampoo, is going to cut his hair.
Iha: Well, this is kind of disturbing.
D’arcy: Warren, say hello.
BC: Gosh, boys, you might wanna move this along, it’s show biz.
Iha: Alright, so...we will dance and we will have a haircut. We can ponder the aesthetics of it all.
BC: (off mic) Jimmy!
Jimmy Frog: Hello Uniondale.
BC: Are you ready to have your hair cut?
Jimmy Frog: Does anybody care if I cut it? (a resounding “no” from the crowd)
Jimmy Frog: Alright.
BC: ...but he’s gonna cut it anyway.
Jimmy Frog: Okay, tonight we’re gonna cut it...during....
BC: Don’t you people understand, this is art! Art, A-R-T, it’s not a man, it’s a movement. Dennis....
Jimmy Frog: Okay, this is Billy’s favorite song.
BC: Ladies and gentlemen, Jimmy Frog...and his haircut.
BC: Thank you very much, I’m glad you enjoyed that.
Iha: Thank you. We could tell you were all quite excited about that. That was our little improv.
BC: We can tell by the overwhelming response that you were really moved by that song and that haircut.
Iha: A fine round of applause for our hair cutter, Jimmy Frog.
BC: Back to nine years of playing concerts as the Smashing Pumpkins, I don’t think we’ve ever seen such an incredible response to anything that went on ever on stage.
Iha: That’s never happened before.
BC: We would now like to play you our most recent single, this is called Thirty-three.
> Bullet with Butterfly Wings
Iha: [unintelligible]. Well, I still can’t believe that the haircut didn’t go over today. I guess for us, it was more symbolic, the shedding of the hair, as well as that of our tour, we thought it would be a big spiritual moment but obviously we’ll have to rethink this. But um...Jimmy normally dances and sings and plays and for us, it was rebellious to have him get a haircut. Well, we shouldn’t talk about such things, we will keep on rocking for you. [unintelligible] will now do a poem. And uh, this next song will rock.
BC: Could you put on the lights for a second? (large cheer)
BC: How’s everybody doin’ tonight? Sorry, just had to throw a junior Ranger out. He thought he was tough, he was throwin’ shit at me, so...he must go, goodbye. So whatchu wanna hear over there?
BC: People behind us?
D’arcy: Do you know there’s people behind us?
Iha: Oh my god!
BC: Those are the people that came to see Fountains of Wayne, D’arcy.
BC: They’re not here to see us so....
D’arcy: Okay, it doesn’t matter then.
BC: ‘Cause if they were here to see us, they’d be standing, that’s how I know. Oh, we send this next song over to you over there and you over there.
Iha: That’s an [unintelligible].
BC: Oh, we’re getting booed, thank you very much, ‘preciate that boo.
Iha: And to everyone else too.
BC: I just say we end the concert right now, James.
BC: Sorry, we’re getting a little old and senile. This next song...is about...me.
> Planet of the Apes clip
> Thru the Eyes of Ruby
Iha: Thank you, thanks, thanks, all you guys are great. Are you still ready to rock some more? Are you still with us [unintelligible]? Cool. I was just checkin’.
(Iha: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Come on, come on people. I still don’t know if you’re with me, come on! Long Island in the house, come on, get those fuckin’ hands in the air! Are you with me? Come on! Hey. That’s right, [unintelligible]. Everybody, on the drums, Matt “Cosmo” Walker. (Matt solo) (screams) (Billy solo begins with one note sustained for 62 seconds) Yeah! Play that one fuckin’ note! (screams) Long Island, the one note, come on, put it up! Didn’t think they got that for you! We get the Chicago blues, people. (screams) Are you people paying a man for one note? Come on. Put your hands in the air for the one note, come on! Does that drive me crazy? (Billy finally plays an actual solo) Does that make you mad now? You got the Chicago blues! Unh.)
Iha: Alright, let’s rock. This next song is called....
BC: No, don’t introduce the next song.
Iha: It hasn’t kept people [unintelligible].
BC: Do not introduce the next song.
Iha: I want to INTRODUCE THE NEXT SONG!
BC: I don’t want you - I don’t press you to introduce the next song.
Iha: These people are anticipating quite - quite a show from now on. They must know what they’re getting.
BC: I think these people are lookin’ at us going, “What the hell is going on on stage?”
Iha: I’m trying now to beat him. I have [unintelligible].
BC: “This is the band I saw on MTV?”
Iha: It’s not like a music video. I’m giving it to ‘em just like a video, the introduction.
BC: I say you just close your eyes, James, you just close your - close your eyes. Close your eyes. Put your head down. And embrace the metal.
Matt: Alright! You know, some people say “well” and some people say “alright.” Me, I say well, alriiiight!!! No, I know something, I know that New York...is the Smashing Pumpkins favorite town. I wanna know...are the Smashing Pumpkins New York’s favorite band? And are you ready to Drooooown??!!! Are you ready to Drown??!! Then you’re gonna Drown.
Iha: Thank you, that was Fred Henderson.
BC: That was um, Matt, he was gonna come up and get a haircut too but...he’d already had his hair cut so.... Again, thanks to everybody for coming. We’re sorry we’re a little uh...crazy but we’ve been on tour since January of last year so we have a right to be fucking crazy.
Iha: I think that makes sense.
BC: But thank you very much again for stickin’ ‘round, for caring, for giving us your respect and we respect you, love you very much, thank you.
> Hummer (tease - about 45 seconds instrumental)
Siva / The Great White Buffalo
(BC during midsong breakdown: We'd like to take this moment to pay homage to the great wight buffalo...and you know what I’m talkin’ about.)
