Continuing their love affair with fellow Illinois rockers Cheap Trick, the Smashing Pumpkins paid tribute to their heroes on Tuesday night in Japan at the site of Trick's career-making performance. The Pumpkins wrapped up their recent European/Australian/Japanese promo tour with a sold-out show at Budokan, the Tokyo concert hall made famous by the live 1978 album recorded there by Cheap Trick. The Pumpkins performed Trick's "I Want You to Want Me" as an encore at the show and have tapped Cheap Trick to open their New World Music Theater charity show in Tinley Park, Ill., on July 7. According to band publicist Gayle Fine, the Pumpkins are scheduled to perform a surprise gig on the back of a flat-bed truck at one of Tokyo's university campuses on Wednesday (June 24).
