Smashing Pumpkins appearance helps sexual/domestic abuse counseling center.

PONTIAC - Smashing Pumpkins vocalist and songwriter Billy Corgan admits it's somewhat bewildering being a Generation X icon.

"There is this media-driven idea about Generation-Xers that all we care about is ourselves", Corgan said.

On Wednesday, Corgan and his two band mates proved otherwise, when they spent the morning signing autographs and watching videos with children and teen-agers at HAVEN, Oakland County's domestic and sexual abuse counseling and referral center.

The visit, which was closed to the media, was a prelude to the Pumpkins' benefit concert for HAVEN on Wednesday night at the State Theatre in Detroit. The sold-out show could bring in proceeds of $90 000 or more for HAVEN, said Executive Director Hedy Nuriel.

"These funds will be used to further our work in ending child abuse and violence in the lives of children", Nuriel said.

HAVEN was founded in 1975 with a goal of providing prevention and intervention services focusing on domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse.

There are six service sites in Oakland County - three in Pontiac, and one each in Novi, Rochester and Southfield - that have a total of about 60 staff members and 200 volunteers. HAVEN has an operating budget of $2.6 million and receives support from the United Way, government grants, foundations and fund-raising efforts.

The band, made up of Corgan and band mates D'arcy and James Iha, paid for staging the show.

The Detroit stop was the fifth for the Smashing Pumpkins, who are in the midst of a special 14-date tour that will help out numerous charities across the country.

"It is very hard choosing who gets money", Corgan said.

Earlier this week, Corgan and his band mates performed a benefit show in their hometown of Chicago for the Make A Wish Foundation, which grants wishes to terminally ill children.

Despite the attention the band has recieved from the tour, none of the trio believes that such altruism will quickly spread to other bands.

"It would be great if we could create some resonance among other musicians when it comes to helping others", Corgan said.

"We don't want people to just say: 'Oh cool'."
